By the end of the year, it can be difficult to find the same energy you had at the start.
The excitement of a new season has worn off. Training sessions start to feel repetitive, motivation becomes harder to find and even things you usually enjoy can begin to feel like another commitment.
This is often when we need to pay attention.
Burnout does not always look like someone giving up or deciding they no longer enjoy their sport. Sometimes it is much quieter. It might be feeling constantly tired, becoming frustrated more easily or finding that something you once looked forward to now feels like a chore.
For young athletes, there can be pressure to keep pushing, especially when everyone else seems to be doing the same. But being committed does not mean having to give everything all the time.
Rest is not something that needs to be earned after reaching a certain level of exhaustion. It is part of being able to perform, enjoy sport and keep developing over the long term.
As the year comes to an end, it is worth remembering that taking a break does not mean falling behind. Sometimes stepping away for a little while is exactly what allows you to come back with a fresh perspective.
The goal is not just to get through another season. It is to still enjoy doing what you love when the next one begins.
